I headed over to the City Council Work Session Room at Denton City Hall—215 E. McKinney Street—right around the 1:00 PM mark on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The room had that familiar civic-meeting setup: the official agenda already posted, accessibility accommodations noted for anyone who needed them, and a clear, structured docket waiting to be tackled. I’d already skimmed the packet beforehand, knowing we were supposed to cover a solid lineup: approving the February 25, 2025 minutes, diving into a report and discussion on the FY 2026-2027 Sustainability Framework Fund Workplan, reviewing staff reports on committee appointments and matrix items, and wrapping up with the standard Texas Open Meetings Act segment for public inquiries, recognitions, and community updates.
Once the clock ticked past to 1:01 PM, the facilitator noted we were just waiting to see if enough members had arrived to call a quorum. Instead of rushing into formalities, there was a genuinely relaxed “let’s just hang loose for a minute” energy in the room as people settled in and checked their materials. We all knew the sustainability funding priorities and program directions were important topics to weigh in on, but local government runs on participation, and sometimes the calendar just needs a little extra time to align. After a brief wait, it became clear we wouldn’t be able to meet the quorum requirement. The chair quickly but politely announced that today’s meeting would be postponed, and we were all excused.
It’s a gentle reminder that civic engagement is a team effort, and even the most carefully planned agendas sometimes need a rescheduled date to get the full committee in the room.
