Hey there! I wanted to share a quick, behind-the-scenes look at the Library Board meeting I attended last Monday night. If you’ve ever been curious about how our local library system stays on track, it’s actually a pretty engaging evening to sit in on.
I pulled into the North Branch Library at 3020 N. Locust just before 5:30 p.m. on March 9, 2026. Once everyone settled into the meeting room and the board confirmed a quorum was present, we were officially in session.
We kicked things off with public comments. As outlined in the agenda, the floor was opened to two community members, each given up to four minutes to share thoughts on library-related topics that weren’t formally listed. It’s always nice to hear neighbors speak directly to the board on matters close to them.
From there, we moved into the formal agenda items, starting with LB26-007. The board reviewed and considered approving the minutes from the February 9, 2026 meeting—a quick, necessary step to keep the record accurate.
Next up was LB26-009, which focused on the Forge Makerspace at the North Branch Library. The board received an informational report and held a discussion about the space. You could tell there was genuine interest in how the makerspace is developing and what it means for community programming.
We then had two back-to-back informational updates. LB26-010 covered the Friends of the Denton Public Libraries, and LB26-011 highlighted the Emily Fowler Library Foundation. Both segments gave the board a chance to hear where these support organizations stand and discuss how they continue to bolster the library system.
After that, we tackled LB26-008, which dealt with policy updates. The board received a report on the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Operating Policy, discussed the changes, and considered recommending approval. It’s the kind of operational detail that keeps our borrowing networks running smoothly across the region.
The final agenda block, LB26-012, wrapped up several smaller but important items where the board received reports and gave staff direction. We touched on the Texas America250 Reading Challenge, plans for a Staff Development Day, updates on meeting room email protocols, and a review of the library’s social media strategy. It was a nice mix of community engagement, team growth, and digital outreach.
As we wound down, the board moved into the concluding segment. Under Sections 551.042 and 551.0415 of the Texas Open Meetings Act, they opened the floor for factual public inquiries and policy clarifications, and shared a few community updates—like expressions of thanks, holiday schedule reminders, recognitions, and event announcements that don’t require formal action but are important to acknowledge.
