It turns out the board officially called the meeting off on January 27, so the room stayed quiet and the chairs stayed empty.
Even though the session didn’t go forward, I spent a few minutes flipping through the posted agenda to see what had been laid out. It was packed with the kind of structured flow you’d expect from a municipal board. They were slated to open with public comment, allowing up to five citizens three minutes each to speak on topics not already listed. After that, the board was prepared to approve the September 24, 2025 meeting minutes and lock in the official 2026 meeting schedule.
The heart of the docket was the Downtown Reinvestment Grant Program reviews. The agenda outlined three specific applications ready for discussion and a recommendation to City Council: a fire suppression grant for the Fine Arts Theater of Denton at 115–116 N. Elm Street, plus two separate grants for West Oak Coffee Bar at 114 W. Oak Street—one general application (looking at up to $50,000) and another specifically for fire suppression. The Downtown Economic Development Committee had already unanimously recommended approval on all three, which suggested a pretty clear path forward once the board reconvened.

The meeting would have wrapped up with the standard concluding items under Sections 551.042 and 551.0415 of the Texas Open Meetings Act, leaving room for factual inquiries, community announcements, and any last-minute acknowledgments.
